SIGNS OF CHOKING AND HOW TO REMOVE THE RISKS

Your dog may show one or more of the following signs if he is choking:

  • Profuse salivation
  • Gagging and retching
  • Unsuccessful attempts to vomit
  • Repeated pawing at the mouth
  • Difficulty breathing

With an obstruction in the oesophagus the signs can be more subtle:

  • Reluctance to eat
  • Occasional vomiting

HOW TO REMOVE THE RISKS

  • Be observant and remove potential choking hazards
  • Make sure your dog’s toys are suitable for his size
  • Don’t leave food or kitchen waste within reach
  • If your dog is a scavenger consider a muzzle on walks
  • Don’t give your dog small bones such as chicken as they can easily become lodged in the throat

PLEASE DO NOT THROW STICKS FOR DOGS THEY CAN EASILY GET STUCK DOWN THEIR THROAT
