The thyroid gland is one of seven glands found in a dog, this gland produces hormones which control the speed of their metabolism.  Dogs with Hypothyroidism do not produce enough hormones this in turn slows down the metabolism which can impact on many parts of the body.


There is no tell tale sign as such but if your dog is suffering from any of the symptoms below then they need to be checked by a vet:

  • Weigh Gain
  • Lethargy
  • A lack of interest in things previously enjoyed
  • Dull Coat
  • Darkened skin
  • Hair loss
  • Susceptibility to skin or ear infections
  • Intolerance to cold
  • A tragic expression –  the disease can cause a loss of tone in the facial muscles which gives the dog a sad look
  • Nerve problems
